The Saturday had been a heavy day for all of us. The evening meeting with the Governor and the security officials had lasted for two hours and we were asked to prepare a list of all the Christians Churches in Zinder, the time of Sunday prayer service and the area where theses churches are located. Fr. Delphin and Fr. Leo went to meet the various pastors to collect the details and bring to the Director of police and the authorities as it was agreed. By the time we finished this task it was already 10 pm. We then got number of calls informing us of the fresh attacks on Christians during the Sunday Celebrations. Fr. Delphin and Fr. Leo then went to meet the governor at his residence at 11.30 pm and pleaded for more protection till 12.30 pm. He was then able to contact the religious, traditional and political leaders to appeal for calm on Sunday. The governor finally took the decision to employ forces in the town and especially in various churches in Zinder to protect the Christians. Due to heavy presence of security forces, we were able to celebrate the Eucharist on Sunday morning praying for peace in the word. Since yesterday night, the security forces have left the Catholic Church leaving us in the hands of the Lord. The night was calm and up to now no incidents have been reported. Many Muslims brothers and sisters came to sympathize with us since the attack on Friday. We have been very much touched by their love, care and concern. We got the news that our provincial Fr. Ignatius Anipu MAfr is on the way to visit us. He will be accompanied by Bishop Ambroise Ouedroago of Mardi. Their arrival is expected on 19 September 2012. There are number of official visits and meetings are foreseen in the wake of Friday attack with political, governmental, traditional and religious leaders in Zinder. Some of the minors who had been arrested on Friday had been released leaving 50 adults in the police custody. We have no news of the judiciary proceedings, however we hope that justice will be established in due course. As long as those who are arrested stay under custody, there is no peace for us because the rumors are that there will be more manifestations and attacks to force the government to release the culprits without any charges.
Friday’s ordeal of a Catholic family: Having dispersed by the tear gas from the Church surrounding, the mob went in search of Christian families to attack and one such family that underwent the persecution is the family of Hipolite Mélé. It was just after the arrival of defense forces and the firemen at the Church, the mob went to the family of Hipolite where all the family members were gathered, came under attack. The mob threw stones at the house shouting slogans and insults. They had been armed with knife, machete, sticks, petrol etc. They had tried to break in to the house; meanwhile Hipolite phoned his sister Sylvie who was then with Fr. Leo at the mission was able to give information to the police and with the persuasion of Fr. Leo the police went in search of the family and found the mob ready to enter the house and set fire. The mob had already half broken the iron door and poured petrol ready to burn. Thank God the help arrived on time as they arrived at the residence of the priests and sisters. The mob was dispersed and as the police entered the house they found Yvette Mélé, a pregnant lady who needed to be brought to the hospital due to the ordeal that she had to go through. The police took her immediately to the maternity and she gave birth to a baby boy the same night at 3.00 am. I went to visit the family of Hipolite on Sunday after the mass, the mother and the baby are safe as well as the whole family, praising God for his marvelous deeds that He has been doing since the past few days. While I was still there, they threw stones at the house again and we had to go into the house for few minutes and wait for the calm to return. (See the photo of the visit of Fr. Leo at the family of Hipolite Mélé and the baby born in the time of turmoil)
This is just one of the stories of many in Zinder. We continue and hope that the peace will be restored. In the evening of Sunday, number of Pastors from various Christian Churches came to visit and sympathize with us. (See the photo of pastors with Fr. Delphin and Fr. Leo also see the photos of the destruction of the house of the Winners Chapel’s pastor.)
The Missionary of Africa community, the Assomption Sisters, the Sisters of St. Joseph de Cluny and the whole Christian community thank all of you who send us the emails, phone calls, sms etc. Let us keep praying for peace in the world and especially for peace in Zinder.
The message of Bishop of Niamey;

Dear all
Since yesterday, there has been no news on any radio or television news channel about the violence and persecution against the Christians of Zinder. We followed all the news stations closely and to our surprise there is no media coverage of the situation in Zinder. I could not keep quite and that is why I have uploaded the photos on Facebook and in the parish website and youtube. Even the people in Niamey are not aware of what is happening. They ask me for photos and news. The authorities have warned me not to publish too much as during the demonstrations they confiscated mobile phones that were filming the event. I just gave the link to people who ask me for news. http://mission-catholique-zinder.weebly.com/index.html
The situation was under control around 6pm as the call for prayer echoed in the streets of Zinder and the police were patrolling around the Catholic Church. The Christians arrived in numbers to sympathize with us and gave us report of their ordeal in their houses, how they were being attacked and threatened. Around 8, pm more soldiers arrived to ensure our security. The thunder and wind gave us a sign that the night would be cool and we could sleep peacefully, guarded by the soldiers. The night was calm in our Church, however this morning we got the news that the protestant Church Winners Chapel had been burnt at night and the pastor and his family narrowly escaped. They are safe now. There are rumours that today there will be demonstrations all over Niger and we are called to be prudent. Yesterday and this morning, a number of our Muslim friends came to see the Church and give us consolation. We have been touched by their solidarity. As of now we are cleaning the Church for tomorrow's Mass. We thank you all for your prayers and support during this difficult situation. May God protect us all.

Thank God that we are all alive. I cannot imagine how God still protects us all. I saw the mob attacking our church and they went wild. Destroying everything and burning all that could be burnt. The sisters have been disturbed; luckily they were not able to enter into their compound. They were taken up by destroying the Church and did not look for us however once they finished with the church they came to the offices and tried to vandalized them meanwhile I phoned the authorities for help. The mob was much more than the few police....they came to the gate of the residence and they were trying to enter, we had locked them all....thank God the help came on time and we had been traumatized for about 45 minutes and it is not yet over...the Christians are being disturbed in their homes and so few Christians have found shelter in the Church...the manifestation continues in the town we hope that this will be over soon... the normal life will return..
